Perched high on a rocky ridge above old town Mutrah in Muscat, Oman, Mutrah Fort (قلعة مطرح) is a medieval fortification that provides visitors expansive views of the city's historic waterfront. The fort, in its present form, consists of three towers connected by a gatehouse and several curtain walls, which create narrow platforms (no more than 10 meters wide) that step up the mountain. The oldest tower is believed to have been constructed in AD 1507; and the rest of the fort was built by the Portuguese in the 1580s, during their occupation of Oman. It is one of several coastal fortifications built by the Portuguese in defense of Muscat during this period. Mutrah Fort remained in military use through World War II. It was restored in the 1980s, and has been open for visitors since 2018. A small coffee shop and pleasant views (when it's not too hot!) make for a great experience.
