Agios Georgios Church (Church of St. George the Triumphant), located near the ancient city of Idalion, in present-day Dali, Cyprus. This is one of several chapels we discovered in the Dali area, when visiting what is now the Ancient Idalion Archaeological Site.
The church (which is more a chapel) is a Byzantine construction that dates to the late 12th to early 13th century AD. It features a relatively common, compressed cruciform-cross design in a rectangular plan, with a dome and recesses. The church was built of stone taken from the ruined ancient city.
Inside are remnants of original wall paintings, but they are in very poor condition. In the photos, the paintings are the black patches on what are now otherwise white-washed plaster walls. Details are still visible, when viewed closely. For example, one photo shows a partial depiction of the angelic host that survives in the dome.
