Agios Neofytos Monastery Cat Park (aka Tala Cat Park) is located in Tala, Cyprus, a few kilometers outside of Paphos. A non-profit organization, the sanctuary was founded by the cat park manager and her husband, after their volunteer caring for a large cat colony at the nearby Agios Neofytos Monastery morphed into a full time job.
The original colony of around 45 cats has grown to almost 1,000 over the last 10 years, due to rescues and the frequent 'dumping' of cats at the sanctuary. Fortunately, the cat park has a vast community of volunteers/supporters and a strong fundraising program. They offer adoptions and sponsorships, fostering, and have special programs to support disabled cats and a TNR (trap, neuter, return) project to help reduce the number of dumps.
The cat park consists of a fully fenced-in sanctuary, where about 850 felines reside. Somewhat sadly, there's also an area in the sanctuary's unfenced parking lot, where an additional number of cats live - most anonymously dumped and/or abandoned at the sanctuary - and are fed and provided with shelter. These eagerly greet visitors upon their arrival.
There were more than a half-dozen volunteers caring for the cats and cleaning the many cages and shelters while we were there. This included an older-British man who comes a few hours, twice a week, just to sit with the kitties. Overall, the cats are well tended, and there is plenty of food, water, and shelter to go around.
