The Basilica of St Dominic (also known as the Basilica of Our Lady of Fair Havens). Established by Pope Pius V in July 1571, it was the first built among the three parish churches in Valletta, Malta. The present church was constructed in 1815, according to a plan by Maltese architect Antonio Cachia, replacing an older church lost to an earthquake and storms in 1780. The original church was dedicated to Our Lady of Safe Haven because of the great number of sailors who used a small chapel on the property, prior to the church's construction, to offer thanks upon their safe return from long voyages at sea. The church is administered by the Dominican Order, who maintain a convent behind the building.
